Guru to The Beatles explains the true meaning of yoga #InternationalYogaDay

This video is from a 1965 interview of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the Guru to the Beatles and founder of Transcendental Meditation (TM).

Sunday, June 21st is the first-ever International Yoga Day

As we all know:

In recent years, Yoga has become extremely popular.

Some say that the Beatles trip to Maharishi’s ashram in Rishikesh played an important part in bringing yoga and Indian spirituality to the West.

As Maharishi explains in the video, yoga has many aspects to it.

Despite it’s rise in popularity, yoga has largely been misunderstood as just physical postures. This is only one aspect of it.

The true meaning of yoga from the ancient Yoga Sutras is “the complete settling of the activity of the mind.” The literal translation is “unity” which refers to union of the outer aspects of life with the subtle inner levels of life.

International Yoga Day

The day was endorsed by the UN General Assembly after encouragement from Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.

In September he had told delegates that “Yoga is not just about exercise, but to discover the sense of Oneness within yourself.”

This understanding of Oneness, Unity, and its location, silent and blissful, deep inside each of us, has been brought to light by Maharishi over 50 years ago.
